Acoustically sealed doors are important in a range of settings, whether it be for use in music rooms, for confidentiality, or to adhere to building standards regarding noise transmission.
An acoustic door seal limits the transmission of sound leakage from one room to another. Depending on the type you opt for, they can either go in the door or the door frame.
An acoustic door seal works by filling the gaps between the door and the door frame to provide a barrier for sound to get through between one room and another.
The best way to acoustically seal a door is to use an acoustic seal around the two sides and top of the door, accompanied by a drop-down seal along the bottom. This means there are no gaps for sound to easily transmit from the room.
Acoustic seals can take several forms, including combined smoke and acoustic seals such as Lorient’s Batwing® range, which are fitted around the door frame to limit both sound transfer and smoke leakage.
Another option is to use intumescent strips that incorporate a built‑in brush or fin. These offer fire resistance as well as smoke and acoustic protection in a single product, making them a practical choice when you need all three performance elements without adding multiple components to the door.
To complete the acoustic seal at the base of the door, a drop‑down seal is typically used—either surface‑mounted or rebated, with rebated versions offering the best performance. Pairing this with a threshold plate creates a smooth, consistent surface for the drop‑down seal to meet, helping to form a cleaner and more effective acoustic and smoke barrier.
